Purpose of the Job
Bioanalytical Sciences develops product-specific assay methods to support process development activities, release and characterisation of proteins and other biomolecules. Techniques include HPLC, ELISA (enzyme linked immuno-sorbent assays), Mass Spectroscopy, Biacore, electrophoretic, enzyme activity assays and other assay methods.
The Senior Scientist Supervisor is responsible for Directing, monitoring and controlling the activities of a team of R&D scientists Establishing or adapting assay methods, verifying suitability for purpose, defining standard operating procedures Transferring of assays between laboratories and working teams, e.g. from external laboratories into CSL R&D, between R&D laboratories and to CMO Identifying and assessing of novel assay formats and technologies, initiating and driving capital procurement of instrumentation,
To be successful in this role the candidate will be required to interact closely with the process development departments and to maintain an awareness of their needs.
Reporting Structure
The position reports to the Department Manager, Bioanalytical Sciences Scientists and Senior Scientists report to the Senior Scientist Supervisor.
Responsibilities
Responsible for providing scientific leadership and project management for multiple PD projects. Plan, coordinate, implement and take responsibility for all designated tasks associated with assay development for the purpose of supporting process development activities, technology transfer (internal & external), in-process testing, release testing and characterisation Manage a team of scientists and senior scientists, including being responsible for personnel development and work plan development, review and assessment against agreed project timelines To direct the development of HPLC, Mass Spectroscopy, ELISA and other required methods for the analysis and characterisation of proteins and other biomolecules To be responsible for method transfer to agreed laboratories
To set standards of scientific excellence in design and performance of experiments and manage the team in the execution of studies To interpret and critically analyse complex datasets, present data updates at project team meetings
Ensuring compliance with regulatory & CSL guidelines for all laboratory work, especially in regards to documentation compliance (SOPs, BPSs, DCFs) To ensure reports and other documentation are prepared to regulatory and other quality standards e.g. standard operating procedures for test methods
Liaising with project leaders, Department Heads, Quality Managers and external collaborators Ensure high safety standards within the areas of responsibility are taken into account and adhered to as governed by local, state and federal regulations, laws and policies as well as CSL’s policies and directives.
To seek out and research new technologies to enhance the department’s capabilities in order to preserve their international competitiveness. To assist the Department Manager in the budgeting process and other activities, as required

Job Environment
This position is located at the Parkville site.
Essential Qualifications/Experience
A tertiary degree with an emphasis on biochemistry, immunology and/or analytical chemistry. Postgraduate qualifications (PhD) with relevance to developing analytical methods or an appropriate level of work experience.
Essential Skills, Knowledge & Attributes
At least 5 years of direct hands on experience in analytical method applications with a proven development activity People management skills Expert knowledge and experience in HPLC and Enzyme-Immuno Assays
Communication and presentation skills Data analysis and troubleshooting skills, attention to detail Appropriate knowledge and experience with proteins, peptides or other biomolecules Strong listening skills, an awareness of customer needs Ability to work effectively in a team Resource planning, scheduling and budgeting skills Able to react well to change and comfortable with external input Experience in the pharmaceutical industry, Exposure to regulatory agencies, method validation and GMP concepts Experience in transferring analytical methods between laboratories
